Ten Warning Signs of Dementia

  1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life: forgetting recent information regarding events or needing aids to help you remember (for example sticky notes, reminders on your phone).

  2. Challenges in planning or solving problems: difficulty managing bills or following a familiar recipe.

  3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks: this could be at home, at work or leisure. Challenges with cooking, using a cell phone, grocery shopping, or driving.

  4. Confusion with time or place: forgetting where you are and possibly how you got to that location, as well as losing track of dates.

  5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relations: challenges with managing balance leading to tripping or possible falls. Difficulty reading due to visual challenges.

  6. New problems with words in speaking or writing: struggling to find a word you are looking for or difficulty following or joining a conversation.

  7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps: unable to retrace steps when trying to find something or placing keys in bathroom when typically, they are hung by the front door.

  8. Decreased or poor judgement: unable to manage money well, having difficulty caring for a pet, and paying less attention to hygiene.

  9. Withdrawal from work or social activities: not wanting to do typical hobbies or keep up with what’s happening.

  10. Changes in mood and personality: getting easily upset or fearful in usual activities; possibly being suspicious of people or places.
